Area: 112,492 km2Location: Honduras borders Nicaragua to the south and El Salvador and Guatemala to the west; 7,326,000 inhabitants, comprised as follows: 90% mestizo, 7% and 3% indigenous black and white respectively. Capital city: Tegucigalpa, the country’s largest city, located at the foot of El Picacho. (1240 m) Official language: Spanish Climate: In the central regions the climate is much cooler and less humid than near the coast. Tegucigalpa's climate is warm and may reach maximum temperatures of 30 degrees C. The rainy season begins in May and ends around October. The Caribbean coast is often rainy. Food: The country's cuisine is based on vegetables, beans, rice, tortillas, fried plantains, meat, potatoes and cheese. The main dishes are conch soup, tamales, tripe soup, salpicon, pupusas, tapado, and meatball soup. National Celebrations: The feast of Our Lady of Suyapa, patroness of Honduras, is celebrated on February 3rd in the village of Suyapa, 7 km southeast of Tegucigalpa. Services and religious celebrations attract pilgrims from all over Central America. Carnival in La Ceiba is celebrated during the third week in May with parades, costumes and street music. Other popular fairs: Copan Ruins (March 15 to 20); Tela (June 13), Trujillo (June 24), San Pedro Sula (the last week in June) and Danlí (last weekend in August). Independence Day: September 15.

Some cities to visit: Comayagua was the capital of Honduras from 1537 to 1880. It still has many examples of its colonial splendor. Copan: The Department of Copan, famous for its Mayan ruins, is located in northwestern Honduras; San Pedro Sula: Located in the beautiful mountain region of Merendon, San Pedro Sula is the second largest city in Honduras. Cayos Cochinos - Roatan: This small and beautiful group of islands and cays off Honduras's Caribbean coast is located near the coast, almost opposite La Ceiba.

Anyone can learn to dive, and Honduras is one of the best places in the world to learn. If you are not yet certified and have little travel time left, you can get certified at home. You can do this for a fraction of the price in the turquoise Caribbean waters surrounded by colorful fish. There is safe, high-quality equipment for rent at several resorts throughout the Bay Islands. If you have your own equipment, bring it, but leave the heavy stuff. Class instruction in several languages ??has made the Bay Islands the "certification destination" for divers from all over the world. For advanced divers, there is availability of courses in underwater photography, cave diving and instructor training.
Infrastructure Although Honduras is a small country, it has four international airports: one in the nation's capital, Tegucigalpa, and another in the industrial capital and tourist center of San Pedro Sula; the third in the ecotourism capital, La Ceiba and the fourth in Roatan, the Caribbean tropical diving capital (title granted by Skin Diver magazine).
There are direct flights and connections from the United States and Canada to all four international airports. Major airlines flying to the country are TACA, Copa Air, Delta Airlines, Continental Airlines, American Airlines and Spirit Airlines. These airlines operate daily flights from Miami, Atlanta, Houston and Newark (seasonal) to San Pedro Sula and/or Tegucigalpa. They also make direct flights on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays (seasonal) to Roatan. Spirit Airlines offers direct flights from Ft. Lauderdale to San Pedro Sula, four days a week or daily (seasonal). In addition, Skyservice offers direct charter flights from Toronto to La Ceiba and Roatan (seasonal).
Honduras also offers a number of domestic flights to/from the four major airports, as well as short routes to several cities, including Utila, Guanaja, the Mosquitia and Trujillo. The main domestic airlines providing these services are Isleña (which is TACA's regional airline) and Aerolineas Sosa.
